And maybe, you can’t get Himesh Reshammiya’s music and the comically ominous ‘Taarzan’ theme song out of your mind.

If you have watched the film, you probably did so ironically or with people who seemed to enjoy their popcorn entertainment without bringing criticism and analysis to the theatres. Buckle up millennials, this is going to be a drive down memory lane. Looking back, I totally get why the film that launched Ayesha Takia was a flop but was it a complete failure? On the anniversary of Taarzan: The Wonder Car, I'm looking back at the film that could've been Bollywood's finer attempts at a revenge drama. Night Shyamalan’s The Village (in the same year, just to give you an idea of the range) so when The Wonder Car appeared with its weird purple hood driven by an unassuming Vatsal Sheth, I was intrigued, particularly by the concept of a possessed car. Having consumed the best of films pretty early into my childhood, I had already lapped up popular films like Back To The Future and more obscure hits like M. I couldn't either when I watched it on a vacation day and it was quite an experience.

The Abbas and Mustan Burmawalla film's spectacle at the movies rivalled an actual car crash, it was terrible but you couldn't look away. It was also the year Taarzan: The Wonder Car released, accelerated through its ambitious 2h 42m run-time and crashed at the box office. 2004 was especially influential with films cementing the early cinematic tones of the decade. It was a strange time for Bollywood as the industry dabbled into everything between big family dramas with Indian diaspora in the States to cheesy college romances. To give the due credit to Dilip Chhabria, makers had named Ajay Devgn's character Deven Chaudhary so that the initials "DC" could be used in the film.Oh, the glorious early '00s, the decade of Dhoom, Main Hoon Na and RTDM. Spoiler Alert! It was Ajay Devgn's ghost that was in the car doing all that.ĭid you know, the car that was quite popular around the release of the film was designed by noted automobile designer Dilip Chhabria, who is recently arrested by Mumbai Police in a case of cheating?Īnything that Dilip Chhabria designs has "DC" logo on it. It could swim, fly, change its shape and beat the crap out of goons, all with ease. In the film, the car was seen doing several stunts. Over the years, thanks to multiple screenings on the small screen, Taarzan: The Wonder Car has garnered a cult following amongst kids.

However, after the film aired on TV, it became an instant hit. Made on a budget of Rs 14 crore, Taarzan: The Wonder Car only collected Rs 4.25 crore at the domestic box office, according to Box Office India.

Despite all their efforts, the movie bombed at the box office and was termed disaster. His involvement in the film was kept as a surprise. Released in 2004, Taarzan: The Wonder Car had created a lot of hype before its release despite starring then-newcomers Vatsal Seth and Ayesha Takia in the lead roles.Īpart from being directed by filmmaker duo Abbas-Mustan, the reason behind the huge hype was the super car, the makers had introduced and was playing the titular character in the film.Īpart from Vatsal Seth and Ayesha Takia, the fantasy thriller also featured Ajay Devgn in a special role.
